2021 Le Difese di Sassicaia IGT Toscana

This is the wine that single handedly put Italy on the fine wine map of the world, starting from the late 1960s. The Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta family is the largest land owning elite of the Bolgheri region. Their business in the time was raising race horses and Ribot which was bred and raised on the estate is regarded widely as possibly the best race horse of all times. The name Sassicaia (Italian sasso meaning stone), indicates a stony field much like the vineyards of Pauillac, specifically Ch. Latour and Ch. Mouton. The 2012 Sassicaia was rated 99 points by Wine Enthusiast, the highest score that the publication has given to the wine in its history. In recognition of its singularly iconic status for Italy, the DOC authorities accorded Sassicaia with its private appellation, whilst all of the wines from Bolgheri are now DOC Bolgheri; Sassicaia is Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC.
