In the year 1481, a family from Ardèche decided to invest in a plot on a hill facing the Rhône. Centuries later, the Chaves still own the best plots of Hermitage, passing them down from father to son, allowing the dynasty to endure through time. This history is engraved in a book, locked in a safe and accessible only to the family. Each successive owner records the important events of the saga within it. A symbol of authenticity, it bears witness to the faith this lineage of winemakers has in their vineyard. For here, the individual disappears for the benefit of the estate. Along with the land, a first name is also bequeathed: every eldest son of his generation is named Jean-Louis (except for Gérard, the exception that proves the rule). But all of this remains very confidential, much like the wines themselves, which inspire true devotion. One must prove their credentials to obtain a bottle, as the entire harvest is reserved from one year to the next and sold to all four corners of the world.
And yet, the Chaves love discretion; no gleaming sign marks the entrance to the cellar in Mauves, where the collective heritage of 16+ generations continues to produce exceptional wine.
