Anne Gros-Paul Tollot La 50:50 2011

Moving to the 2011s, this warmer year has added a smidge more texture and overall depth to the wines, and in general, it’s a more successful vintage here. Having said that, the 2011 Minervois 50 / 50 is maybe not the best example of this. While it has more up-front and rounded fruit and texture, it shows a rustic edge to its tannin, and I like the overall purity and focus of the 2012 more. Nevertheless, this tank-aged blend of old-vine Carignan and Cinsault (some Grenache) offers plenty of character and will drink nicely over the coming couple of years.

• The best part of the Gros inheritance in Vosne Romanee belongs to Anne Gros and her eponymous estate. Clive Cotes, MW, top Burgundy critic, has often rated Anne Gros as the #1 quality producer of Burgundy.
• Whilst her Burgundy wines are inaccessible she brings her Burgundy feminine touch to this warm part of France in Languedoc. She finds that Carignan and Grenache often behave like Pinot Noir and she has been able to fashion these, normally high alcoholic tannic wines into elegant master pieces
