Roland Velich launched Moric in 2001 as a dedicated Blaufränkisch project, departing from his family's Weingut Velich operation to focus on the potential of Burgenland's unique terroir. The venture represented a shift in the region's winemaking constitution, emphasizing a revival of historic vinification practices customary among the producers of old, Velich's approach has influenced numerous local winemakers to reconsider traditional methods as well as adopt Blaufränkisch as a monovarietal. The project centers on parcels in Neckenmarkt and Lutzmannsburg, areas with an established viticultural history spanning decades. Vines anywhere between 10 to 50 years old are planted on limestone and loam soils which define the terroir. Moric is a tremendous success story, one that has elevated Austrian wine perception internationally.
